This Incredible Gesture from the Alfred Mann Foundation Helped a Retired Marine Reclaim his Life

Category: Science,Technology

Meet the recipient of the world’s first robotic hand.

Soldiers are devoted to this country in a way that few professionals are. They are willing to sacrifice life and limb, and sometimes their duty calls them to do just that. During his second tour of Afghanistan, when Staff Sergeant James Sides encountered an IED he did not hesitate to act. He immediately began the process of disarming the bomb, but something went wrong.

An explosion threw him from his position, disorienting him. As he tried to pick himself up he realized that his forearm had shattered from the impact. He had also lost his entire right hand.

Although Sides made a full recovery, he lamented that his life would never be the same. That’s where the Alfred Mann Foundation found a way to step in and help. The Foundation began in 1985. Alfred Mann, who himself had a long history making prosthetics and bionics for multiple parts of the body, wanted to tackle the challenge of assisting individuals with debilitating handicaps. With the help of Rogers and Cowan, and Executive Vice President Steve Doctrow, the Foundation set out to debut their scientific breakthrough.

The Alfred Mann Foundation fitted Sides with a revolutionary device that relies on embedded electronics to function. A small transceiver was surgically inserted into Sides’ muscles. This device reads the movements of his muscle and his arms and translates that data into motions of the hand. All of this happens in mere moments.

The future of medicine will deal extensively with this interaction between man and machine. The technology used to produce the hand for Sides demonstrates an acute knowledge of the human body. Prosthetics, especially robotics, will lead to dramatic improvements in the quality of life for these individuals.

Reasons for Considering Laptop Rental in Orange County

Category: Computer

laptop-windows

The third most populous county in California, Orange County, is a place that offers many options. These options include the choice of either buying or renting a laptop if you need one for whatever purpose. If you are new to the idea of laptop rental in Orange County, you will likely find the following discussion useful.

There are at least three reasons why you will want to rent a laptop instead of spending hundreds or thousands of dollars to buy one. These reasons include temporary use, quick access to try the specific model of laptop you plan to buy, and security.

Temporary Use

This is the main reason for renting a laptop. If you need a portable computing device to do something and you don’t have access to your own laptop, you can just rent one. If you are traveling for example and you forget to bring your laptop, you can simply search for a rental shop or company in Orange County to quickly have access to a laptop that you can bring with you. It’s an alternative to spending time in an Internet cafe if you want to avoid the noise and crowds.

For businesses, laptop rental becomes a convenient option when doing on something that requires more computers than what is available. It is also a good way to equip traveling employees with the laptops they can use for improved productivity and online collaboration. Multiple laptops may also be rented to be used in certain events or occasions like when having seminars, product presentations, or when setting up temporary offices at exhibits or expos.

Quick Access

There are cases when you want to spend a good amount of time trying out the performance and ergonomics of a particular model of laptop you plan to buy. You can’t do this by spending a lot of your time at a computer store or by simply reading or watching product reviews. To actually have the experience of using the specific laptop model you intend to get, you can just rent one. It should give you more than enough time to properly decide if the laptop meets your expectations. It’s a good way of trying a product out first so you don’t have to despair over the amount you spent in case the device turns out to be a disappointment.

Security

There will be times when you want others to have access to a laptop when you are working on a project but you just don’t want to share your laptop with them. Here’s where laptop rental becomes a viable option. This allows you to protect your computer from possible data security threats as well as from the threats of theft and damage from mishandling.

Whatever reason you have, you can be sure that there are many companies in Orange County that offer laptop rental services. As long as you spend some time finding a reputable company that offers the best deal, laptop rental for the reasons mentioned above should be advantageous for you.

Identifying the Genes Inside Humans

Category: Science,Technology

Written by: The Midland Certified Reagent Company

One of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of the twenty-first century is the ability to decode the human genome and essentially read our own genes. We’ve learned a lot since that point, but we still have a long way to go applying this knowledge in a way that benefits patients. Someday, dual-labeled probes will be able to screen DNA from parents to analyze a child’s potential for disease. First, we need to identify the genes that cause these mutations, so we can better understand how to deal with them.

Identify Harmful Genes

Scientists hope that soon we’ll be able to identify a disease based on its genetic makeup, which an important step in curing. The challenge lies in what to attack. Without knowing the genetic makeup of diseases, any vaccines engineered to fight them might hurt well-meaning cells too. Medical scientists are beginning to use the automated process of oligo synthesis to study how a disease might react before we try to use a cure on a live subject.

Synthesize Cures

Part of understanding the body means understanding how medical science impacts it. We might not know that a particular vaccine could alter someone’s genetic structure and cause mutations we don’t want unless we experiment for those outcomes. A modified oligo allow techs to simulate the disease with normal human DNA, literally diagramming how a potential cure alters the genetic material involved.

Final Thoughts

With a greater understanding of the human genome, we can fight disease at a molecular level instead of treating symptoms as they arise.

New camera technology from Intel for laptops and others

Category: Technology

Dell_venue8_ces

Smartphones carry advanced cameras with new technologies while laptops and other devices struggling and lagging behind. Now the void is fulfilled with Intel’s RealSense 3D camera installed on laptops and others. It uses two depth sensors in addition to a standard lens. This creates a 3D effect and the technology allows removal of the background without a green screen. Picture and gestures are more accurate and allow of 3D scan of real objects. Intel’s standalone RealSense 3D F200 can be connected to a PC using USB3 port. There are other technical requirements for connecting the camera to a PC too.

The gesture-based technology consists of series of consumer 3D cameras. It consists of several components including a color camera, depth camera with IR light source and microphone array. The technology allows face recognition and tracking, hand and other object tracking, and voice recognition.

Recent laptops and tablets from several manufacturers including Dell, Acer, HP, Asus and Lenovo are already using the technology and many more will follow soon. Natural user interface technology is used in Kinect, Leap, HoloLenses and many other products. Many expect the technology to migrate into all-in-one devices within the year.

Where streaming video services and technology are heading?

Category: Technology

guide

Streaming video services are becoming more and more demanding and service providers are clamoring to get your attention. Also, there are new providers who are glutting the market with new products and services. It is good news for consumers.

Currently there are established streaming video providers including Netflix, Amazon.com, YouTube from Google and several others. Additionally, there are TV bundlers including Comcast, Walt Disney, and CBS. Some of these services including Comcast, Disney and Twenty-first Century Fox are cooperating with each other to provide services such as in Hulu to provide unbundled content to customers. Hulu reportedly paid $160 million for the entire episodes (180) of “Seinfeld.” They claim that they have more than nine million subscribers. Among the new entrants to the digital video service is streaming music service provider Spotify. They are in discussion to create Web-based video hub. Reports indicate that they are interested in bite size content generated by users for the moment.

Technology to deliver digital streaming video services over the Internet is already in place or service providers are working hard to establish. 4G LTE provides faster downloads for mobile devices to watch videos and movies and video chat.

Buy-Side Platforms 101

Category: Business Services

Do not rely on a single source of traffic, because that will only grow your campaign so far. You will find your creative will wear out its welcome, your brand will saturate the marketplace and dilute itself, and the strength of your campaigns will decrease.

 photo 209716-266118-Wonderful101Protrusionjpg-620x_zpsgdywqryt.jpg

Instead, utilize a buy-side platform to deliver highly targeted traffic from a wider range of sites. This expanded inventory typically offers lower bids, targeted traffic and the chance to increase conversion rates.

Targeting Basics

If you’re looking to target by more than just interest, a buy-side platform can offer you the ability to micro-target base on almost any characteristic of your audience. If you want to bid on mobile traffic, you bid on service provider or device. Desktop ads can be shown to people using a specific browser. You can even target by location, sometimes getting hyper-local by city or town.

If you manage your campaigns and take advantage of this precision targeting, you will see greater profit margins and higher volumes of traffic.

Why Real-Time Matters

When you bid on a buy-side platform, you’re bidding on real-time traffic. This means that your campaign goes live and begins collecting data the moment everything is finalized. Check your analytics to be sure the campaign is receiving traffic, and then monitor bids to be sure you’re not getting outbid and losing traffic. You can also begin to make some guesses at what people might be doing upon viewing your landing page by looking at bounce rate and the time spent on a particular page.

This is also excellent for experimentation because you can see if your changes are improving performance within a few hours instead of a few days.

Conclusions and Takeaways

When you have control over your campaigns, you’re able to run tests and scale campaigns according to your own strategy. Market research will teach you which bids are most important, and you’ll learn more about targeting as you begin to collect data about your market, but you can deploy changes and see results quickly.

If you are in a market susceptible to changing trends, working in real-time is essential. If there is a delay in reporting, you may think you’re bidding on great placements only to discover the fad has passed. Buy-side platforms offer greater control over your campaigns and immediate data.

Looking for the building block of the universe

Category: Technology

 photo 6a00d8341bf7f753ef019b006560a3970d_zpsrzbmbfeg.jpg
The European Organization for Nuclear Research commonly known as CERN is located in Geneva and using the world’s powerful equipment known as the Large Hadron Collider conduct research on particle acceleration. The 17 mile long circular path for the collider can run 11,000 laps per second, very much close to the speed of light. It cost $6.6 billion to build and took more than 10 years to complete. It has an annual budget of $1.3 billion. It started its operations in 2008 and currently undergoing $105 million upgrade. The next phase of research is planned to start in March 2015. It is expected to unravel mysteries of the universe through its research, primarily by colliding atoms.

A new director is scheduled to take over operations of CERN in January 2016 and she is working hard to recruit new member countries to reduce the financial burden on current members. Most of its members are from Europe and Israel joined the organization last year as a full member. The scientists of the CERN are looking for the building block of the universe that vanished after the big bang. The organization uses its own software to analyze data they collect.

Simple Tips to Give Your Mobile Advertising a Boost

Category: Business Services

Mobile advertising is a game of immediacy, but you can micro-target for extremely specific use cases. Data is the king of mobile. When you purchase mobile traffic from an ad exchange, you are buying from a wide array of traffic sources and networks. The data you have about your target market should inform every decision you make. You can quickly find yourself over spending to accumulate data you can’t use. Use these simple tips to give your campaigns a boost without over spending.

 photo Mobile_Ad_zps7mwwqrb1.jpg

Pay Attention to Details

You should know what time of day you tend to get the most conversions, and note days of the week too. Pay attention to the frequency that your ads are shown to users, and be sure that you’re not diluting your brand in pursuit of a conversion. Train yourself to notice bounce rates and to notice when your traffic or conversions start dropping off. This could be a sign that your ads need to be rotated, or your creative is getting stale.

Theorize and Test

Don’t make a change without having an end game. In the beginning, your goal is to figure out what works about your ad and how you can optimize your traffic to achieve maximum conversions. Once you understand what your audience wants to see, try something new in a different ad group. The most common place to start is with the headline, which is typically packed with benefits and keywords. An easy test to run is to add your keyword into the headline and see how it performs. The assumption is that users looking for that keyword will respond to your ad because it contains the keyword. Once you have found that users do or do not respond to keywords, you can test this theory with other keywords or move on to other campaigns.

Location Targeting

Mobile campaigns tend to be highly specific to a certain location. Sometimes, the offer is only valid at that location but more often than not it’s a question of where your target audience lives. Mobile tends to work best when it can service the user before a brick and mortar store, or when it offers a lower price than a brick and mortar store.

Softer and gentle robots are coming soon

Category: Technology

 photo Robear-robot-1_zpsqx5jo90i.jpg

Rough and rigid robotic arms were not only unable to handle delicate work but also disliked by many. This is why new breed of developers including Empire Robotics and Pneubotics are developing much softer arms. They don’t have electronics components but still grip delicate items such as a bulb due to softer grip connected to a hard robot. Some are even testing pumped air into the robotic arm to provider softer touch. Vinyl material containing veins that hold air, water and hydraulic fluids that work like muscles are connected to motors instead of more rigid parts to provide the softer touch.

New breed of robotic companies are working on gently handling sick patients, pull bricks at a disaster site to save an injured person, and even safely place an elderly on a bed. The United States government is also supporting some of these efforts through the U. S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Some estimates that the robotics market worth more than $10 billion a year and many startup companies getting into the fray. Not just the hardware developers, software to run gentler robots are also increasing their efforts to come up with programs to run these robots.
