Meet the recipient of the world’s first robotic hand.

Soldiers are devoted to this country in a way that few professionals are. They are willing to sacrifice life and limb, and sometimes their duty calls them to do just that. During his second tour of Afghanistan, when Staff Sergeant James Sides encountered an IED he did not hesitate to act. He immediately began the process of disarming the bomb, but something went wrong.

An explosion threw him from his position, disorienting him. As he tried to pick himself up he realized that his forearm had shattered from the impact. He had also lost his entire right hand.

Although Sides made a full recovery, he lamented that his life would never be the same. That’s where the Alfred Mann Foundation found a way to step in and help. The Foundation began in 1985. Alfred Mann, who himself had a long history making prosthetics and bionics for multiple parts of the body, wanted to tackle the challenge of assisting individuals with debilitating handicaps. With the help of Rogers and Cowan, and Executive Vice President Steve Doctrow, the Foundation set out to debut their scientific breakthrough.

The Alfred Mann Foundation fitted Sides with a revolutionary device that relies on embedded electronics to function. A small transceiver was surgically inserted into Sides’ muscles. This device reads the movements of his muscle and his arms and translates that data into motions of the hand. All of this happens in mere moments.

The future of medicine will deal extensively with this interaction between man and machine. The technology used to produce the hand for Sides demonstrates an acute knowledge of the human body. Prosthetics, especially robotics, will lead to dramatic improvements in the quality of life for these individuals.

New large and sleek phone from Samsung

Samsung is getting ready to release new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ in late August 2015 according to media reports. Along with it they are expecting to release new Galaxy Note except in Europe. Galaxy S6 Edge+ is a large format (5.7-inch screen), high-end, handheld device. The screen of the new phone is 0.6 inches larger than its previous large phone and the screen is scratch resistant. Many call it a “phablet.” Apple’s shift to large format phone prompted Samsung to introduce a competing phone from them.

The new Edge+ will have the curved glass screen that is customary to many smaller Samsung devices especially smartphones. The new “phablet” comes with extra gigabytes of memory, up to 4GB of RAM, helping with multi-tasking capabilities. This will also help with faster processing. Camera in the new phone will allow 1080p live broadcast of high definition video.

Samsung holds the lead (73 million units) over Apple (47 million units) in regard to shipments of smartphones worldwide. The new phone comes with a metal edges and glass back giving it a trendy look and feel. The new phone will help to promote its new payment system, Samsung Pay that it expects to introduce soon.

One of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of the twenty-first century is the ability to decode the human genome and essentially read our own genes. We’ve learned a lot since that point, but we still have a long way to go applying this knowledge in a way that benefits patients. Someday, dual-labeled probes will be able to screen DNA from parents to analyze a child’s potential for disease. First, we need to identify the genes that cause these mutations, so we can better understand how to deal with them.

Identify Harmful Genes

Scientists hope that soon we’ll be able to identify a disease based on its genetic makeup, which an important step in curing. The challenge lies in what to attack. Without knowing the genetic makeup of diseases, any vaccines engineered to fight them might hurt well-meaning cells too. Medical scientists are beginning to use the automated process of oligo synthesis to study how a disease might react before we try to use a cure on a live subject.

New camera technology from Intel for laptops and others

Smartphones carry advanced cameras with new technologies while laptops and other devices struggling and lagging behind. Now the void is fulfilled with Intel’s RealSense 3D camera installed on laptops and others. It uses two depth sensors in addition to a standard lens. This creates a 3D effect and the technology allows removal of the background without a green screen. Picture and gestures are more accurate and allow of 3D scan of real objects. Intel’s standalone RealSense 3D F200 can be connected to a PC using USB3 port. There are other technical requirements for connecting the camera to a PC too.

The gesture-based technology consists of series of consumer 3D cameras. It consists of several components including a color camera, depth camera with IR light source and microphone array. The technology allows face recognition and tracking, hand and other object tracking, and voice recognition.

Recent laptops and tablets from several manufacturers including Dell, Acer, HP, Asus and Lenovo are already using the technology and many more will follow soon. Natural user interface technology is used in Kinect, Leap, HoloLenses and many other products. Many expect the technology to migrate into all-in-one devices within the year.

Where streaming video services and technology are heading?

Streaming video services are becoming more and more demanding and service providers are clamoring to get your attention. Also, there are new providers who are glutting the market with new products and services. It is good news for consumers.

Currently there are established streaming video providers including Netflix,, YouTube from Google and several others. Additionally, there are TV bundlers including Comcast, Walt Disney, and CBS. Some of these services including Comcast, Disney and Twenty-first Century Fox are cooperating with each other to provide services such as in Hulu to provide unbundled content to customers. Hulu reportedly paid $160 million for the entire episodes (180) of “Seinfeld.” They claim that they have more than nine million subscribers. Among the new entrants to the digital video service is streaming music service provider Spotify. They are in discussion to create Web-based video hub. Reports indicate that they are interested in bite size content generated by users for the moment.

Technology to deliver digital streaming video services over the Internet is already in place or service providers are working hard to establish. 4G LTE provides faster downloads for mobile devices to watch videos and movies and video chat.
